Chapter Fourteen

Bella descended the stairs strutting like a queen. That’s how good she felt, dressed in the gown and the crown on her head. Was this how young women going to the prom felt? She wouldn’t know. There was no prom for her or for Jenna. Longing for things like that simply made their lives worse. She didn’t dare utter that word when she was close to graduating. Escaping her house was all she could focus on.

Seeing Rakha at the bottom of the stairs gave her a sense of pride. That she could catch and hold the attention of this wild and primal male sparked fire in her chest. Thad was there too. He’d changed forms again. The forties white male was back. Now that she knew what to look for, she could see the cracks in his glamor. She doubted anyone else could see it.

She took a deep breath as if she could scent her surroundings. Crazy, but she went with it. She was checking to see if fear was coming from Jenna. There was no scent. It was like she was refraining from having any thoughts that may give her away. Bella had noticed that Jenna could do this before but never to this extent. Was it a new talent or had she changed enough to understand what her sister was doing?

“My warrior queen and mate.” Rakha may be a monster, but he knew how to make her feel good.

“Rakha, my warrior and my king.” The words felt ritualistic, and she was sure that she hadn’t meant to greet him like that.

Thad gave her a wide smile showing his human teeth. “The bond is true.”

Wearing a blue gown, Jenna nodded her head in agreement. “I believe you’re right. Hi, I’m Jenna, Bella’s older sister.”

“It is a pleasure to meet you, sweet Jenna.” Thad took her hand and kissed it, making Jenna giggle and blush. Bella cast the ‘I’m watching you eye’ at him. He ignored her and leaned into Jenna, whispering something into her ear. She laughed again and turned to meet Rakha.

“You’re the sister of my mate, which makes you my sister.” Rakha didn’t shake her hand. He gave her a strange hug, making sure his body didn't touch hers even as he enveloped her in his arms. “I pledge to keep you safe with my life until you meet the mate who will die for you.”

He leaned in and scented her neck. “Your government assured me that humans didn’t have one such as you.”

“We are careful not to let the government know we exist.” He nodded, like what she said made perfect sense.

Bella was looking between her intended and her sister. Did this have anything to do with the voices Jenna didn’t like to talk about? She opened her mouth, but Jenna placed her hand on Bella’s arm, stopping her.

“Now is not the time. Soon.” Bella nodded. Jenna had been telling her that for years, but she trusted her more than anyone on the planet. She cast an eye at Rakha and then at Thad.
